When I hear the term ‘gender,’ I innately assume we are talking about the human biology of being female or male. However, ‘gender’ is much more in-depth than just being female or male. It is the range of characteristics between masculinity and femininity with reference to the social construct and is the product of power. In this lesson, I learned the definition of gender idendity and how it is a very important category of difference and essentially how a person identifies themselves while gender expression reflects an individual’s own internal sense of their gender, but is this could also mean how one expresses outwardly their appearance that includes their own sense of style, interest, and mannerism. I also learned what “performativism” means and that speaking can hold more than just “communication.” What we say can also influence action like in the video provided said word like “I do” at a wedding or “guilty” during a trial can hold alot more discernment.

Religious scholars study gender because embedded in religion, gender can influence how someone practices their religion and interepret it. Gender itself also has significantly impacted religious practices historically. For example, some cultures and religion prioritize male leadership over the voice of women and further demonstrates the notion of power in the study of religion.
